Cleaning 101

Here are some basic household ingredients you can use to clean your home that works,  is environmentally friendly and will save you money.

Household ingredients:

  • Baking soda
  • Washing soda
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Detergent or liquid soap
  • Tea tree oil
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Olive oil

Cream scrub

Pour half cup of baking soda into a bowl, and add detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. Make as much as you need at a time.

Window cleaner

Mix half teaspoon of detergent, 3 tablespoons vinegar and 2 cups of water into a spray bottle, and shake it up before use.

Oven cleaner

Sprinkle water over the oven and enough to cover the grime with enough baking soda. Sprinkle more water over the top, then let the mixture set overnight. Wipe up the grease the next morning as the grime will have loosened. Wash the remaining residue from the oven with detergent on a sponge.

All purpose spray

Combine half teaspoon washing soda, detergent and 2 cups hot tap water in a spray bottle, then shake until dissolved. Apply and wipe off with a rag.

Tea tree wonders

Combine 2 teaspoon of tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle, shake, and spray on mould and mildew problem areas including bathroom tiles and shower curtains. Do not rinse.

Floor cleaner, including hardwood

Add a capful (2 teaspoons) of eucalyptus oil to a bucket of water to make a disinfectant wash for floors.

Furniture polish

Mix half teaspoon of olive oil and 1/4 cup of vinegar in a glass bottle. Use a soft rag to wipe the solution onto the wood surfaces.
